OUT and Match Ends: R Ashwin takes the final wicket of the day as he castles Gamage for 0. With that, Ashwin becomes the fastest cricketer ever to take 300 Test wicket. India win the match by an innings an 239 runs.
12:54 (IST)
India were in line for their biggest ever Test win in terms of runs but for that to happen, Sri Lanka had to be dismissed for 165 or less. Earlier, India beat Bangladesh by an innings and 239 runs which is the current highest.
12:51 (IST)
OUT: India are now only one wicket away for a massive win as Umesh Yadav removes Dinesh Chandimal for 61. Chandimal heaves the ball up in the air on the leg side and Ashwin takes an easy catch at mid-wicket. Chandimal becomes Umesh's 99th scalp of Test cricket.
12:44 (IST)
Stat Attack: This is the second time Lakmal & Chandimal have put on 50+ for the 9th wicket in a Test - they previously did so against Bangladesh in Colombo, 2017. More pertinently, Lakmal has been a partner in each of the last five 9th wkt 50+ stands for SL in Tests (including today)!
12:44 (IST)
DRS: Virat Kohli opted to use the DRS as Ashwin and Vijay at FSL, seemed to be sure that the ball had taken an edge off the ball of Lakmal, before getting caught by Saha. However, replays showed that there was no edge and Lakmal survives.
12:42 (IST)
Dinesh Chandimal and Suranga Lakmal are playing the defying game at the moment. Both of them are defending well, hitting the occasional boundary. Indian bowlers are biding their time at the moment and trying to create pressure.
12:36 (IST)
SIX: Lakmal gets into the act now and comes down the ground off the bowling of Ashwin and hits the ball over the bowler's head for a huge six. With that, the 50-run partnership also come up between these two (52 off 49).
12:32 (IST)
Four: Umesh Yadav bowls a perfect leg cutter and the ball takes the inside edge of the bat of Chandimal and goes for a boundary behind the keeper. With this four, the visitors also cross the 150-run mark.
12:29 (IST)
Good Fielding: Vijay Shankar shows that he is a good athlete as he stops a sure shot boundary by running his heart out and pushing the ball inside after it took an edge of the bat of Lakmal. Kohli & Ashwin are appreciative of this effort.
12:27 (IST)
The players are back on the ground and the second session is underway now. Ashwin is bowling the first over while VIjay Shankar has come on the field as the substitute fielder. Ishant Sharma seems to have not come out on the field.
12:21 (IST)
Stat Attack: Ashwin is all set for a historic milestone in this Test. He is currently on 299 Test wickets (when he had taken his 3rd wicket of the innings. If he gets them in this match, he will be the quickest to do so in the world.
12:14 (IST)
Four Indian bowlers have bowled so far in the second Lankan innings and all of them have been among the wickets. Ashwin has scalped three, Ishant and Jadeja have two each while Umesh has scalped one. Kohli will be a very happy skipper at this point in time.
12:07 (IST)
Sri Lanka will be massively disappointed with their batting effort in this innings as more than good deliveries, they have just thrown away their wickets with some very bad shots. India will be supremely happy with their efforts and will look to ends the innings as soon as possible in the second session.
11:55 (IST)
Stat Attack: A special mention for Dinesh Chandimal who has left from the front in both the innings for the visitors.
Sri Lanka skippers scoring twin 50+ scores in a Test v India: -
1. Duleep Mendis, Kandy, 1985: 53 & 124
2. Marvan Atapattu, Delhi, 2005: 88 & 67
3. DINESH CHANDIMAL, NAGPUR, 2017: 57 & 53*
11:49 (IST)
Lunch: Sri Lanka go into the break reeling at 145/8, trailing India by 260 runs. Indian bowlers have been on the money since the first ball of the day. Ashwin has been the pick of the bowlers as he has scalped three. Ishant and Jadeja have two each while Umesh also has a wicket in his kitty.
11:46 (IST)
Fifty: Dinesh Chandimal continues to fight a lone battle as he reaches his fifty with a boundary off the bowling of Ishant Sharma. 15th half-century of his Test career and he is showing how to bat on this wicket.
11:44 (IST)
Dropped: Suranga Lakmal gets a lifeline as Ishant Sharma drops the catch off his own bowling. Lakmal hit the ball straight at the bowler and Ishant couldn't catch hold of it. Then after getting a new life, Lakmal hits the boundary to add insult to the hosts' injury.
11:42 (IST)
Four: Chandimal is fighting a lone battle out there for the visitors as after hitting a boundary on the last ball of Jadeja's over, the Sri Lankan skipper does the same to Ashwin. With two boundaries in as many over, Chandimal is now batting on 49.
11:37 (IST)
Lunch Delayed: With just two wickets left, the first session has been extended by 20 minutes by the officials. Indian bowlers will look to finish the job in the first session itself.
11:34 (IST)
India are now just two wickets away from a massive win. If Sri Lanka are dismissed for less than 165, this will be India's highest Test win ever. Indian bowlers are making sure that they reach this milestone.
11:31 (IST)
OUT: Ashwin picks his third wicket of the day as he removes Rangana Herath for 0. Herath becomes Ashwin's 299 wicket of his Test career.
11:26 (IST)
OUT: The Lankan batsmen seem to be in a hurry as another one falls. Ashwin hits the pads of Dilruwan Perera and the umpire says out. However, the visitors opt for the DRS. Replays showed that the ball crashed straight into the pads and third umpire too gives him out.
11:17 (IST)
OUT: Ashwin was hit for two sixes and one four in his last over by Shanaka and the ace India spinner has his revenge as he removes the right hander for 17. Once again, Shanaka tried to hit the ball out of the park, but this time, he was caught by Rahul at mid-on. Lanka lose sixth as Ashwin picks his first of the innings.
11:11 (IST)
Four: Another great delivery from Ishant Sharma as he produces an outside of Chandimal's bat but the ball flew between the slip fielder and gully. Skipper Chandimal survives and he also gets a boundary. With that, the visitors also corss the 100-run mark in their second innings.
11:09 (IST)
Four and SIX and SIX: Dasun Shanaka is not looking to hang around as he slogs Ashwin on the leg side for a four and two six. All the ball went in the same region as Shanaka scores 14 runs from this over against the run of play.
11:04 (IST)
OUT: Another one bites the dust as this time, Ishant Sharma scalps the wicket of Niroshan Dickwella. Ishant came from around the wicket and bowled it short. The ball took an outside edge of the southpaw's bat and Kohli took the catch in second attempt in the slip. Lanka lose fifth as Ishant picks his second.
11:00 (IST)
  • Not taking away anything from the Indian bowlers but Sri Lanka are in this position only because of themselves. The three wickets that have falled today, could all have been avoided. These were some of the softest dismissals that one could see in Test cricket. Meanwhile, Ashwin gives away just one run from his over after returning to the attack.
